A little madness in the spring is wholesome even for a king....
~Emily Dickinson
The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come....
~ Song of Solomon 2:12
For the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers are springing up and the time of the singing of birds has come. Yes, spring is here.
~ Song of Solomon 2:11-12
It is so small a thing
to have enjoyed the sun
to have lived long in the spring
to have loved
to have thought
to have done.
~Matthew Arnold
Out-of-Doors
The kids are out-of-doors once more;
The heavy leggins that they wore,
The winter caps that covered ears
Are put away, and no more tears
Are shed because they cannot go
Until they're bundled up just so.
No more she wonders when they're gone
If they have put their rubbers on;
No longer are they hourly told
To guard themselves against a cold;
Bareheaded now they romp and run
Warmed only by the kindly sun.
She's put their heavy clothes away
And turned the children out to play,
And all the morning long they race
Like madcaps round about the place.
The robins on the fences sing
A gayer song of welcoming,
And seems as though they had a share
In all the fun they're having there.
The wrens and sparrows twitter, too,
A louder and a noisier crew,
As though it pleased them all to see
The youngsters out of doors and free.
Outdoors they scamper to their play
With merry din the livelong day,
And hungrily they jostle in
The favor of the maid to win;
Then, armed with cookies or with cake,
Their way into the yard they make,
And every feathered playmate comes
To gather up his share of crumbs.
The finest garden that I know
Is one where little children grow,
Where cheeks turn brown and eyes are bright,
And all is laughter and delight.
Oh, you may brag of gardens fine,
But let the children race in mine;
And let the roses, white and red,
Make gay the ground whereon they tread.
And who for bloom perfection seeks,
Should mark the color on their cheeks;
No music that the robin spouts
Is equal to their merry shouts;
There is no foliage to compare
With youngsters' sun-kissed, tousled hair:
Spring's greatest joy beyond a doubt
Is when it brings the children out.
~Edgar Guest
In Like A Lion, Out Like A Lamb
March roars in like a lion so fierce,
the wind so cold, it seems to pierce.
The month rolls on and Spring draws near,
and March goes out like a lamb so dear.
~Lorie Hill
When Spring Appears
Meadowlarks
give lusty cheers
when spring appears
when spring appears.
Buds and seeds
prick up their ears
and blades of grass
show eager spears.
And only icicles
weep tears
when spring appears
when spring appears
~Aileen Fisher
The Year's at the Spring....
The Year's at the spring
And the day's at the morn;
Morning's at seven;
The hillside's dew-pearled;
The lark's on the wing;
The snail's on the thorn:
God's in his heaven--
All's right with the world!
~Robert Browning
Spring Again
Spring again
Spring again
Spring again
Isn't it?
Buds on the branches
A breeze in the blue
And me without mittens
My sweater unbuttoned
A spring full of things
All before me to do.
~Karla Kuskin
Essence of Spring
Early one bright morning
I stepped outside the door
I noticed something different
I didn't see before.
The cold winds of winter
Blow gentler towards Spring
All around me becomes renewed
For every living thing.
I hear a new melody
From high up in the trees
The one only a bird can sing
A song especially for me.
The smells,the sights,the wonders
Seems to be all around
Just step outside into nature
See the wonders that abound.
~Christine McClemans
Spring Cleaning
March bustles in on windy feet
And sweeps my doorstep and my street.
She washes and cleans with pounding rains,
Scrubbing the earth of winter stains.
She shakes the grime from carpet green
Till naught but fresh new blades are seen.
Then, house in order, all neat as a pin,
She ushers gentle springtime in.
~Susan Reiner
Song for Spring
It's almost here - It's safe to say.
I saw a Crocus yesterday -
Its' colors bright - A lovely thing.
My heart Rejoiced! 'Twil soon be Spring!
The winter blues will soon be gone.
And birds will soon burst forth in song.
The coralbells will gently ring.
The Daphne yells "It's almost Spring!"
It's neary here! It's coming fast!
The Robins will appear at last.
Oh Wonderous Joy! I too shall sing!
And join in Nature's "Song for Spring".
~M.Garren
Flowers Bloom
Flowers blooming
brilliant reds, yellow, and purple.
Trees are budding.
Birds are chirping,
New life abounds.
The Earth warms and renews itself.
Good bye winter,
Hello spring.
~Cynthia Sutton
Spring
Oh, how I long for the time when flowers are in bloom,
and for the time when all the sun's rays zoom.
When all of the winter's slush and snow are banned,
and when the birds can try their hand.
I long for a time when the grayness of winter disappears,
and then the birds' sweet songs, I hear.
The time for these things are just around the corner, I know,
but for now, the chilly winds continue to grow.
The leaves on the trees slowly flutter to the ground,
not making even the faintest whisper of a sound.
The snow blankets the frozen earth,
making people long for the the next season's birth.
But alas, the cold winter days are not yet through,
but do not despair, for the sky will soon be blue.
So until the winter days have past,
we'll have to wait out the winter, as we have winters past.
Spring Fever
In seasons Spring's the best of all
Its wonder seems to shout,
For now's the time all life begins
The greens of earth now sprout.
We feel the wonder all around
All things begin to grow,
The still of winter's all but gone
Warm breezes start to blow.
The rains begin to nourish
All buds begin to swell,
The trees now start to flourish
The flowers cast their smell.
Anticipation starts to mount
We long to feel the heat,
To shed the boots, and bare our toes
Feel sand beneath our feet.
It's worth it all, the wait I mean
We know there is a reason,
For waiting just around the bend
Is Spring, my favorite season....
~Brenda Ehmka
Spring
The things that remind me of spring
are the butterflies and their colorful wings.
When I look at the sky,
and one flies by.
I know it is finally spring!
~Tiff, age 10
Springtime Paradise
I walked with Spring along a path
Where roses took a dew-dropped bath,
Where lilacs' white and purple hues
Salute the day with rave reviews.
I danced with Spring along a creek
Where frisky frogs played hide-and-seek,
Where dogwood trees wore lacy gowns
Neath canopies of cotton crowns.
The earth stood still, my cares took flight;
My soul was filled with pure delight.
I walked with Spring where Nature trod
And gazed upon the face of God.
~Nora M. Bozeman
Welcome Spring
I have heard a mother bird
singin' in the rain,
Telling all her little ones
Spring has come again!
I have seen a wave of green
Down a lovely lane,
Making all the hedges glad
Spring has come again!
I have found a patch of ground
Golden in the sun,
Crocuses are calling out
Spring has just begun!
~Irene Thompson
The Mayflower Buds
The mayflower buds
in simple beauty bring.
Home to the heart the first
glad thoughts of Spring;
~Joseph Howe
Trickle, Trickle, Splash, Splash
Tell me, how long will this rain last
The rain keeps droppin', there ain't no stoppin',
Tell me, how long will this rain last?
~ Manhattan Transfer
