A snowflake is winter's butterfly.
Winter Solitude
In a world of one color
The Sound of wind.
~ A haiku by Basho
Nature is full of genius, full of the divinity; so that not a snowflake escapes it's fashioning hand.
~Thoreau
Welcome winter with a crackling fire and a warm heart.
~Alice Smythe
The snow was blinding to look at, as if it had just been sown with blue-white, glittering diamonds.
~Hans Christian Anderson
There is salvation in snow.
~Elizabeth Weber
Rosy cheeks and crispy air, cheery hearts are everywhere!
January brings the snow,
Makes our feet and fingers glow.
~Sara Coleridge
Snowflakes are one of nature's most fragile things, but look at what they can do when they stick together.
~Verna M. Kelly
The dust of snow
From a hemlock tree
Has given my heart
A change of mood.
~Robert Frost
Where did you get that little red nose?
Jack Frost kissed it, I suppose.
He kissed it once, he kissed it twice.
Poor little nose, it's cold as ice!
The snow fell gently all the night.
It made a blanket soft and white.
It covered houses, flowers and ground,
But it did not make a single sound.
I like the days in winter
When paths are packed with snow,
And feet make creaky footsteps
Wherevever footsteps go.
And I like days in winter
When snow lies soft and deep,
And footsteps go so quietly
You'd think they were asleep.
~Aileen Fisher
They shine like silver butterflies
Drifting in the sun,
As though they fly on crystal wings
That winter cold has spun.
They catch and hold each soft sunbeam
And then, without a sound,
Turn into sparkling gossamer
Before they touch the ground.
~Sandra Liatsos
Roll the snow into some balls.
Make a snowman, oh so tall.
Place a hat upon his head.
Give him buttons that are red.
Use some coal to make his eyes.
You can do it if you try!
Next, he needs a carrot nose.
Where will we get one of those?
Make a mouth and he'll be done.
Making snowmen is such fun!
There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you ..... In spring, summer and fall people sort of have an open season on each other; only in the winter, in the country, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself.
~Ruth Stout
The cold was our pride, the snow was our beauty. It fell and fell, lacing day and night together in a milky haze making everything quieter as it fell, so that winter seemed to partake of religion in a way no other season did, hushed, solemn.
~Patricia Hampl
January is here, with eyes that keenly glow,
A frost-mailed warrior
striding a shadowy steed of snow.
~Edgar Fawcett
Look into the garden,
Where the grass was green;
Covered by the snowflakes,
Not a blade is seen.
Now the bare black bushes
All look soft and white.
Every twig is laden-
What a pretty sight!
The north wind doth blow,
And we shall have snow,
And what will poor Robin do then?
Poor thing.
He'll sit in a barn
And keep himself warm
And hide his head under his wing.
~Traditional nursery rhyme
Winter Weather
Let's put on our mittens
And button up our coat,
Wrap a scarf snugly
Around our throat.
Pull on our boots,
Fasten the straps,
And tie on tightly
Our warm winter caps.
Then open the door
And out we go
Into the soft
And feathery snow.
When October Goes
And when October goes the snow begins to fly
Above the smoky roofs I watch the planes go by
the children running home beneath a twilight sky
Oh, for the fun of them, when I was one of them.
~Barry Manilow
The Legend of the Wedding Ring
In a far off country many centuries ago.
A kind young king was married to a princess he loved.
Together they lived happily
Until they learned one day that duties were to force
The king to journey far away.
One night, before he left,
He tossed some pebbles into a moonlit pool
On the palace grounds
As he sat thinking of his lovely Queen.
Something wonderful occurred to him
As the lovely ripples widened,
From where the little pebbles had fallen.
The next day,
Remembering the glistening circles he had seen,
He had a gold ring made
To fit the finger of his Queen.
“There is no ending or beginning
To the circle of this band.”
The King said as he slipped it on her finger.
“And that is why I have chosen this golden ring
To be a pledge to you.
My love will last through all eternity.”
And so, since that time,
A golden ring has been a symbol
Of the beauty of devotion.
And the beauty of the endlessness of love.
